Our expeditions on the west coast of Vancouver Island are dedicated to exploring and experiencing the wildlife, wilderness, and rich Nuu-chah-nulth cultural heritage of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands.

An archipelago of more than three hundred islands and islets situated at the centre of Barkley Sound, the Broken Group Islands are the jewel of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The coastal waters here are exceptionally productive. Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands form a world where black bears feed on shellfish at low tide, ravens drop clams from the sky, gray whales sift the shallows for tube worms, and killer whales patrol kelp forests for salmon and seals. Living and travelling aboard the schooner Passing Cloud, and through shore excursions, kayaking and zodiac tours, we’ll explore the islands, beaches, shores, old-growth rainforests, rocky intertidal zones, kelp forest communities, estuaries and fiords of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands.

The abundant marine resources and the unique geography of this region have also supported indigenous populations and maritime cultures for millennia. Today the Nuu-chah-nulth people (meaning “all along the mountains and sea”) comprise 14 Nations living along the west coast of Vancouver Island. As we travel through Barkley Sound we will visit the traditional territories of the Huu-ay-aht, Tseshaht, Uchucklesaht, Toquaht, and Ucluelet Nations. We will learn about the Nuu-chah-nulth expression “Hishuk ish Tsawalk” (meaning “everything is one and all is interconnected”).

During our explorations here we will learn about the ancient and intact cultural heritage of this spectacular region. With permission, and accompanied by First Nation representatives, we will visit ancient village sites and learn about archaeological research at shell middens, stone fish traps, and strategic defensive sites that are ubiquitous here. With the aid of local historians we’ll also explore and learn about the recent “post-contact” era, from fur-traders to homesteaders, and from whaling stations to marine research stations. We hope you’ll join us!

Includes first night at Whiskey Landing Lodge followed by a visit to the Ucluelet Aquarium before departure.
