What an expedition season we had in 2014! From all of us at Outer Shores, we want to say a huge thank you to every one of our guests, crew, partners, and service providers who made this season an incredible adventure.
We are already starting to look forward to our 2015 season, and want to take this opportunity to introduce to you one of the expert naturalists who will be joining us aboard Passing Cloud in the new year.
We look forward to sharing more adventures with you in 2015!

Spring 2015 Cultural Spotlight: Welcome aboard Archaeologist and ethnographer Denis St. Claire
As we explore the Broken Group Islands and the surrounding waters of Barkley Sound, one can’t help but be impressed by the spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife of the region. This is a world where ravens drop clams from the sky, gray whales sift the shallows for herring roe, black bears feed on shellfish at low tide, killer whales patrol kelp forests on the hunt for seals and salmon, and ancient cedar trees tower over rich rocky shores. The deep and pervasive cultural heritage of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, who lived here not so long ago, is perhaps even more impressive.
To help focus our cultural lens in Pacific Rim National Park, we are excited and honoured to invite award-winning archaeologist and ethnographer, Denis St. Claire, aboard the Passing Cloud next spring. After 40 years of focusing his research on the Tseshaht, Toquaht, and Huu-ay-aht peoples of Barkley Sound, Denis’ perspective of the islands, beaches, forests, and waters of this region is truly remarkable. What Denis has learned and discovered in this region will captivate and fascinate our guests and crew alike, and it is guaranteed to change the way we see and understand the indigenous cultures of this marine wilderness area and others like it.
Denis will be joining our April 26 and May 2 departures from Ucluelet. If you are interested in joining this rare opportunity, please contact us soon as space is limited. For more information about Denis’ background, and a selected list of his publications, please visit the Outer Shores Crew page of our website.
