Mate / Captain-in-Training
Mat grew up on the shores and waters of Indian Arm (Say Nuth Khaw Yum) near North Vancouver. It was there that he first developed a passion for sailing, exploring, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Those early years proved formative and led him to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies and Geography at the University of Victoria. Driven by his passion for the coast, Mat has gained much sea experience through various marine tourism operations and now holds a Transport Canada 60 ton captain’s license. He’s an accredited sailing instructor with Sail Canada and lives, works, and plays on his own 34ft sailboat for much of the year. While not working aboard sailboats, Mat is always trying to learn something new and can often be found reading maintenance manuals, guides on coastal ecology or coastal history, and enjoys sharing that knowledge with those around him. He also enjoys rock climbing, cycling, and a fine cup of coffee.
