“Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”
– Mary Oliver
Mat grew up on the shores and waters of Indian Arm (Say Nuth Khaw Yum) near North Vancouver. It was there that he first developed a passion for sailing, exploring, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Those early years proved formative and led him to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies and Geography at the University of Victoria.
Driven by his passion for the coast, Mat has gained much sea experience through various marine tourism operations and now holds a Transport Canada 60 ton captain’s license. He’s an accredited sailing instructor with Sail Canada and lives, works, and plays on the water year round. While he is obsessed with boats of all shapes and sizes, he does spend some of his free time on land, both working on his 40 year old vehicle and skiing and climbing in the BC backcountry.
2022 marks Mat’s 4th season with Outer Shores.
