Final days
A beautiful sunrise greeted the final day of our tour.
We didn’t have to travel far for our first photo stop of the morning – only 500m or so to shore and into some gorgeous old growth forest. It’s hard to convey the sheer size and grandeur of these ancient giants in a picture. Human forms (in this case Chris) provide a readily recognizable shape and sense of scale in such situations.
Along the shoreline Russ pointed out some ancient rock walls built by coastal natives thousands of years ago to attract clams which they harvested for food. Along with the clams, numerous colorful bat stars resided in the shallows.
We also explored some of the other local beaches under beautiful sunny skies.
After a leisurely cruise back to Uclulet to drop off our guests, Russ and I took the boat to Bamfield for the night. Bamfield is a small town on the south side of Barkley Sound famous for the marine station which provides classes in coastal ecology to high school and university students from across Canada. We spent the night there and most of the next day waiting for some high winds and heavy seas to calm before making our run down to Victoria. This gave me an opportunity to explore the beaches and forests around Bamfield – in the pouring rain of course.
All in all it was a wonderful inaugural photo tour with great weather, scenery and wildlife. Join us for our 2015 tour in Johnstone Strait – an area famous for humpback whales and orca!
