Whether based on the schooner Passing Cloud or Outer Shores Lodge, boat excursions are central to all of our expeditions. During our expedition aboard Passing Cloud, we use our Bombard 550 rigid hull inflatable boat extensively for wildlife viewing and exploring the habitats and environments we visit. Typically, with six guests and two crew aboard, this boat provides a spacious and comfortable platform for our explorations.
Notably, there are no docks where we go and therefore beach landings are the norm when we go ashore for Nature Walks and Cultural Visits. This requires guests to swing their legs over the side of the boat and step through water (usually shallow!) to get ashore. For this reason, rubber boots or other forms of waterproof shoes are a necessity.
Some of our favourite boat excursions include drifting through kelp forests and eelgrass meadows, exploring hidden passages and channels through island archipelagos, navigating estuaries and river systems in the Great Bear Rainforest, and viewing colourful and diverse marine life as we drift through the world-famous Burnaby Narrows in Gwaii Haanas.
