“It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.”

– Jim Rohn

Matt is a mariner, conservationist, photographer, and avid outdoorsperson. Originally from Ontario, he spent the summers of his youth teaching sailing on the Great Lakes. In 2018, he moved to Fernie BC to attend an adventure tourism course at College of the Rockies. After a few years of playing on skis in the BC backcountry in the winter, and teaching sailing on Saltspring Island in the summers, he decided to land on the coast and make a career in the marine industry.

In addition to 10 seasons of experience as a sailing instructor, Matt has worked on charter sailboats in the Salish Sea, operated vessels during marine survey and salvage operations, and apprenticed with a shipwright in Vancouver. He also is involved with Emerald Sea Protection Society; a non-profit dedicated to the clean-up of subsurface marine debris on the BC coast. Matt has a deep love for the unique ecosystems and topography of the BC coast and will be a lifelong advoked for its conservation, and restoration.

In his spare time, you can find Matt hiking in the mountains of Strathcona or combing the beaches of northern Vancouver Island.
