Outer Shores and Sierra Club BC Join Forces

Outer Shores and Sierra Club BC are teaming up to increase public awareness of the beauty and global significance of the Great Bear Rainforest, home to Coastal First Nations Peoples since time immemorial, and featuring the largest intact tract of coastal temperate rainforest in the world.

We’re very excited to welcome special guest, Jens Wieting, Sierra Club BC’s Forest and Climate Campaigner, aboard the Passing Cloud this spring.  We also look forward to welcoming new guests aboard to discover first-hand the beauty of this unrivaled region and the importance of protecting it.

“I am incredibly excited to be joining Outer Shores Expeditions on board Passing Cloud for an adventure in the wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforest and to once again experience the natural and cultural richness of the region’s First Nations territories,” says Wieting.

Jens played an important role over the past 10 years with Sierra Club BC in the implementation of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements signed in February 2016 between BC Government, First Nations, logging companies, and environmental organizations.

“This will be my first visit to the region since the announcement of the full implementation of the agreements and I am looking forward to sharing with my fellow passengers the story of how this monumental accord was achieved and moved from conflict to collaboration for healthy rainforests and healthy communities,” adds Wieting.

The partnership between Outer Shores Expeditions and Sierra Club BC brings together the opportunity to showcase the beauty and fragility of this region with a minimal carbon footprint, and to help protect it for generations to come. Partial proceeds from our Spring in the Great Bear Rainforest expedition will go towards Sierra Club BC’s Great Bear Rainforest Campaign, to ensure ongoing implementation and monitoring of the ecosystem-based management framework and conservation agreements in collaboration with First Nations, Government, and industry.

“We are very happy about the partnership between Sierra Club BC and Outer Shores. Outer Shores’ support will help us to ensure ongoing monitoring of the conservation agreements for the Great Bear Rainforest and taking the lessons learned to other parts of British Columbia,” says Sierra Club BC’s Executive Director, Bob Peart.
